What is a landing on a staircase?
Clear, concise answers.
A landing (Podest) is a level surface within a staircase with several functions:
Purpose: - Direction change: In U-shaped or Z-shaped staircases, the landing connects two runs - Resting point: Breaks up long runs for greater comfort and safety - Fall protection: Catches a potential fall before it extends the full length of the staircase - Access: Can serve as access to adjoining rooms at intermediate levels
Regulations (DIN 18065): - Required on straight staircases after a maximum of 18 risers - At least as wide as the staircase - Minimum depth: 90 cm
In winder staircases, the winder treads take over the direction-change function -- a separate landing is usually not necessary.
HTS plans landings so they integrate harmoniously into the overall construction and make optimal use of the available space.
