What is a child safety strip?

Clear, concise answers.

On open staircases without risers, gaps can form between the treads that may be dangerous for small children. A child safety strip (also called an anti-fall strip) is mounted under each tread and reduces the open gap to under 12 cm.

Regulations: DIN 18065 does not mandate child safety strips nationwide, but in some German federal states they are required by building authorities. Even without a requirement, they are recommended in households with young children or pets.

At HTS: Child safety strips can be included as an extra during staircase planning. They are made from the same wood as the staircase and blend unobtrusively into the overall design. Alternatively, risers (closed treads) can be chosen -- these close the gap completely and are available as an upgrade in the standard price segment.
