How many steps can a staircase have without a landing?
Clear, concise answers.
This FAQ covers the maximum-riser planning rule. For the geometric definition of an L-shaped layout see the glossary entry *L-Shaped Staircase*.
DIN 18065 stipulates that straight-flight staircases must have an intermediate landing after a maximum of 18 risers. The landing provides a resting point and improves safety by breaking a potential fall.
The landing should be at least as wide as the staircase and have a minimum depth of 90 cm. In winder staircases, the winder treads themselves create the change of direction -- a separate landing is not required.
For multi-storey staircases (e.g. from basement to upper floor), HTS plans landings so they serve as comfortable direction changes and visually structure the staircase. Landings can also be used as intermediate levels with access to adjoining rooms.
