Stair Flight — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Continuous section of a staircase between two levels.
A stair flight is the uninterrupted section of a staircase that connects two levels. It consists of at least three consecutive steps and ends either at an intermediate landing or at the main landing. Under DIN 18065, a flight should contain no more than 18 rises; above that, a rest landing must be inserted. By position within the overall staircase, the bottom flight (from the lower floor) and the top flight (to the upper floor) are distinguished. The direction in which a flight runs and its rise-going ratio are the central quantities in stair planning.
