Half-Mortised Staircase — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Stringer staircase with step ends exposed on one side.
The half-mortised staircase is a hybrid between a fully mortised and a saddled stringer staircase. On the wall side, the treads are mortised into the stringer; on the open side, they project visibly beyond the stringer. There, the stringer only runs up to the underside of the treads, so the step ends dominate the visual appearance of the staircase. This construction combines the stability of the mortised joint on the wall side with the open, light feel of a saddled construction on the show side.
