Stringer Tie Rod — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Tensioning screw fixing treads into the stringer mortises.
The tie rod – also called a stair bolt – is a tensioning connection that holds treads permanently pre-stressed inside the mortises of a stringer. It is driven from the outside of the stringer through the stringer thickness into the tread end and tightened against a nut or specialist fitting. The tensioning keeps the glued tread-stringer joint permanently closed, absorbs timber movement and keeps the joints tight for years. Number and placement of the tie rods form part of the structural sizing of a stringer staircase.
