Lateral load-bearing elements of a staircase.

Stringers are the lateral components that carry the steps and bound the stair flight. A distinction is made between wall stringers (on the wall side) and open stringers (on the open side). In housed stairs, the treads are set into grooves in the stringers; in saddle stairs, the treads rest on top of the stringers. Stringers can be made from solid timber, steel or flat steel.
