Open Stringer
The stringer on the open side of a staircase.
The open stringer — also called the outer stringer — is the lateral stringer on the open side of a staircase facing the stairwell. It is the counterpart to the wall stringer and often carries the railing. In winding stairs, the open stringer must follow the curved path, placing special demands on its shaping. High-quality open stringers are made from solid timber or steel.
