Free air space in the centre of a stair installation.
The stairwell void is the open air space enclosed by stair flights, landings and railings. In multi-storey stairwells, special requirements apply to railing heights along the void; for fall heights exceeding 12 m, the landing railing must be at least 110 cm high.
