Larch
Hardest native softwood with a reddish colour tone.
Larch, with a Brinell hardness of approximately 19 N/mm², is the hardest native softwood and the only one with a degree of natural weather resistance (durability class 3–4). The warm, reddish colour tone and distinctive grain make larch especially interesting for outdoor stairs and terrace steps. For heavily used indoor stairs, larch is too soft as a softwood — hardwoods such as oak or beech are the better choice.
