Special Staircases — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Staircases with unconventional construction beyond standard forms.
Special staircases are all staircases that depart from the classical stringer construction and require their own structural solutions. Examples include bolt-supported staircases, folded-plate staircases, spiral staircases, curved staircases with a stairwell opening, space-saving stairs and flat-stringer staircases. Special staircases are chosen when a design statement, difficult spatial conditions or particular structural demands call for them. They usually require individual structural sizing, often a formal approval or a European Technical Assessment, and demand especially precise production.
