Tread Grooves — Underfoot element
Category: Underfoot element
Slip-resistant or decorative grooves routed into the tread surface.
Tread grooves are narrow channels milled into the tread surface to increase slip resistance or to provide a visual effect. On outdoor stairs and heavily used staircases, grooves running perpendicular to the direction of travel noticeably improve safety, especially when wet. Indoors, grooves often serve as a subtle grip aid near the tread edge or as a recess for slip-resistant inserts made of rubber or aluminium. Today, these grooves are almost exclusively machined on CNC processing centres.
