Tread Nosing (Leading Edge) — Underfoot element
Category: Underfoot element
The front edge of a tread in the direction of travel.
The tread nosing – also called the leading edge – is the forward boundary of a tread in the direction of walking and therefore the edge on which the foot strikes when ascending. It is a central reference line in stair construction: going, overlap and profile depth are all defined relative to it. For safety, the nosing is often protected by a stair nosing profile or highlighted in a contrasting colour, improving slip resistance and reducing wear.
