Stair Nosing Profile — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Protective profile on the front edge of stair treads.
A stair nosing profile is fitted to the leading edge of the tread. It protects the step edge from wear and damage, increases slip safety through its textured surface, and when in a contrasting colour serves as a step-edge marking for better visibility. Profiles are made from aluminium, stainless steel or plastic and are an especially important safety element in renovations.
Nosing Profile Depth: The profile depth indicates how strongly the leading edge of a tread is profiled, rounded or set back. It is measured as a horizontal dimension at the step nosing. For profile depths up to 8 mm, the going corresponds to the visible tread width in plan. For heavily profiled nosings with a profile depth greater than 8 mm, the going is determined separately so the safety-relevant tread width remains correctly reported. This distinction is regulated by DIN 18065.
