Tread Thickness
Material thickness of a stair tread.
The tread thickness indicates how thick a stair tread is — measured from bottom to top surface. Common thicknesses for solid-timber treads are 40 mm for residential use and 60 mm for heavily used or cantilevered steps. Renovation treads are significantly thinner at 15–20 mm. Adequate tread thickness is important for load-bearing capacity, stability and the high-quality appearance of the staircase.
