The sculptural wood staircase construction
Folded staircases
Sculptural wood staircase without classic stringers — free-standing or on stringer beams, in every flight form.

Free-standing or on stringer beams — the floating look
The folded staircase manages without classic stringers: treads and risers are glued together in a zigzag so the staircase looks like a folded ribbon — sculptural, floating and open. We build it in exactly two structural variants. Free-standing, the staircase carries itself via the balustrade and is anchored to the wall with bolts on the wall side — it appears to float freely in the room. On stringer beams, the folded run rests on side open-string stringers; this gives a calmer, clearly framed line. We manufacture both variants in our own workshop in Witten, in every flight form and in all six woods — we resolve the statics via balustrade and wall bolts or via stringer beams.
- Zigzag principle: treads and risers are glued to each other — no side stringers needed, the staircase looks like a folded ribbon
- Free-standing: carried via the balustrade, anchored to the wall with bolts — floating, open look
- On stringer beams: the folded run rests on side open-string stringers — calmer, clearly framed line
- All flight forms: straight, quarter- or half-turn, with a landing — the flight form follows your floor plan, not the construction type
- Six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea — oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered
- Material mix possible: treads and risers may be combined from different woods or surface finishes
Free-standing versus on stringer beams — the two folded variants
| Feature | Free-standing | On stringer beams |
|---|---|---|
| Load transfer | Via the balustrade, anchored to the wall with bolts on the wall side | Via side open-string stringers (stringer beams) |
| Look | Floating and very open — the staircase seems to stand freely in the room | Sculptural, but clearly framed at the side by the stringer |
| Effect in the room | Maximum lightness, keeps the view open | Somewhat calmer, emphasises the folded line |
| Structural requirement | A load-bearing wall for the bolts and a load-transferring balustrade | Support for the side stringer beams |
| Flight forms | All — straight to turned | All — straight to turned |
| Woods and surfaces | All six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered | All six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered |
