Turned around a vertical axis
Helical and spiral staircases
Turned around a vertical axis — around an open well or a central post, in every flight form from our Witten workshop.

Around the well or around a central post — two ways to turn around the axis
A turned staircase rotates around a vertical axis and connects two storeys on a small footprint. We build it in two clearly distinguishable construction types. With the helical staircase around an open well, the steps run around an open centre — the well — carried by side stringers. So that the staircase follows the turn, we make these stringers from straight sections that we join segment by segment; the rotation thus emerges from honest, straight solid wood rather than from bent components. With the spiral staircase, the entire flight turns around a central post, the spindle, on which the steps are threaded individually — this is the most compact variant. Which construction type suits your floor plan depends on the available space, the storey height and the desired look — we clarify this during the on-site measurement. We manufacture both construction types in our own workshop in Witten, in every flight form and in all six woods.
- Helical staircase around an open well: the steps run around an open centre, carried by side stringers — airy, open look
- Segmented stringers: the turn emerges from straight stringer sections joined polygonally — honest solid wood construction, no bent components
- Spiral staircase around a central post: all steps are threaded onto the central spindle — the most compact turned construction
- Construction choice by floor plan: available space, storey height and desired look decide — we advise during the on-site measurement
- All flight forms: the flight form follows your floor plan, not the construction type — because we manufacture in our own workshop in Witten
- Six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea — oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered
Helical staircase around the well versus spiral staircase — the two turned construction types
| Feature | Helical, around the well | Spiral, around a central post |
|---|---|---|
| Pivot | Around an open centre (the well) | Around a central post (the spindle) |
| Load transfer | Via side stringers made of straight, segmented sections | Via the central spindle onto which the steps are threaded |
| Space requirement | A little more footprint, but more comfortable steps | Very compact — the most space-saving turned construction |
| Look | Open and airy, the open centre keeps the view free | Sculptural and compact, emphasising the turn around the centre |
| Typical uses | Gallery, loft, generous stairwell | Compact connection between two levels, tight floor plan |
| Flight forms, woods and surfaces | Any flight form, all six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered | Any flight form, all six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered |
