Curved Staircase with Stairwell Opening — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Curved staircase with a central opening instead of a solid spindle.
The curved staircase with a stairwell opening is a curved stair form without a massive central core. Instead of a load-bearing spindle, the staircase encloses a free inner space – the stairwell opening. The load is carried by curved outer stringers and, where required, by an inner beam. The open core makes the staircase feel noticeably lighter than a spiral (spindle) staircase and at the same time provides a dominant design feature in the room. Depending on the plan, the opening can be round, oval or polygonal. The construction is demanding and requires curved, mostly glue-laminated stringers and precise tread flaring.
