What does it cost to clad a concrete staircase with wood?

The price depends on the number of steps, the chosen wood, the surface and whether risers are clad as well. Because each concrete step has its own contour, we make the cladding individually — a flat figure would be misleading. An on-site measurement makes sense: we measure the steps digitally and then give you a concrete price. The measuring fee is €150-250 and is credited against the order.

Does this also work in new build, or only on existing staircases?

Both. In new build we clad the freshly cast concrete shell staircase directly and turn it into a warm wooden staircase from the start. In existing buildings we modernise an existing concrete staircase whose structure is preserved. In both cases the approach is the same: we measure every step digitally because concrete steps are rarely exactly straight, and make the cladding to fit. Concrete staircases are not a question of building era — they are found in new builds just as in older houses.

How is the wood cladding fixed to the concrete?

The wood treads are permanently fixed to the concrete shell staircase — glued and screwed, depending on the substrate and step shape. What matters is that the cladding sits firmly and without a gap; we achieve this through the millimetre-accurate manufacture from the digital contour measurement. Which fixing makes sense in each case we clarify during the on-site measurement.

Which wood is suitable for cladding the concrete staircase?

You choose from six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea. As a surface there is oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered. For heavily used staircases we are happy to recommend the more robust woods such as oak or beech heartwood — but the choice is above all a question of the desired look. Because we manufacture in our own workshop in Witten, you combine wood and surface freely.

When is cladding worthwhile, and when is a completely new staircase better?

As long as a load-bearing concrete structure exists, the wood cladding is the leaner and usually more economical path to a warm staircase — the structure stays, only the surface is renewed. A completely new staircase makes sense when there is no suitable structure or when the staircase routing itself is to be changed. In that case our staircase replacement is the right service. What suits your case we will tell you honestly after the measurement.

That is why we trace every single step on site with a digital measuring device that captures the contours directly. From this data we make the wood cladding to the millimetre in our own workshop in Witten, so that every step sits without a gap. This works equally well in new build — when the concrete shell staircase is refined directly — and in existing buildings, when an existing concrete staircase is to receive a new, warm tread.
