Structure stays, surface renewed

Concrete staircases with wood cladding

Refining a concrete shell staircase with solid wood — millimetre-accurate thanks to digital contour measurement, for new build and existing buildings from our Witten workshop.

Concrete shell staircase with solid oak cladding — manufactured in our Witten workshop

The structure stays, the surface is renewed — solid wood on the concrete shell staircase

A concrete staircase carries reliably — as a reinforced-concrete construction it is robust and fire-safe, but raw and cool. We leave the structure exactly as it is and renew the surface alone: we clad the concrete steps with solid wood and thus turn the shell staircase into a warm wooden staircase. The treads are clad, and on request we add matching risers. The decisive point here is the precise fit: due to the formwork, concrete steps are rarely exactly straight — each step has its own contour. That is why we trace every single step on site with a digital measuring device that captures the contours directly. From this data we make the wood cladding to the millimetre in our own workshop in Witten, so that every step sits without a gap. This works equally well in new build — when the concrete shell staircase is refined directly — and in existing buildings, when an existing concrete staircase is to receive a new, warm tread. You choose from six woods, each oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered.

  • Structure stays: the reinforced-concrete staircase keeps carrying, we only renew the surface — robust and without touching the statics
  • Solid wood cladding: we clad the treads and add risers on request — for a closed, warm tread
  • Digital contour measurement: we trace every step with a digital measuring device because concrete steps are rarely exactly straight
  • Millimetre-accurate manufacture: from the contour data we make the cladding to fit in our Witten workshop — every step gap-free
  • New build and existing: whether a fresh concrete shell staircase or an existing concrete staircase — the wood cladding fits in both cases
  • Six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea — oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered

New build or existing — the same path to a warm wooden staircase

Concrete staircases are not tied to a building era — they are found in new builds just as in existing houses. The wood cladding fits in both cases because we measure every step digitally on site. The only difference is the starting point.

New build — refine the concrete shell staircase directly

In new build the concrete shell staircase is often already cast before the interior fit-out begins. We clad it directly with solid wood and turn the shell element into a warm staircase from the start.

  • A fresh concrete shell immediately gets a wood surface
  • Digital contour measurement compensates for formwork tolerances
  • Free choice of wood, surface and risers

Existing — modernise an existing concrete staircase

An existing concrete staircase keeps its structure and gains a new, warm tread. Instead of demolishing the staircase, we clad the existing steps with solid wood — a comparatively lean intervention.

  • Structure stays, no intervention in the statics
  • Existing concrete steps are clad contour-accurately
  • Cool concrete becomes a warm wooden staircase
