The classic wood staircase construction
Stringer staircases
The classic wood staircase construction — mortised or open-string, in every flight form.

Mortised or open-string — and every flight form
In a stringer staircase, side stringers carry the treads — the classic and most common wood staircase construction. We build it in two variants: in the mortised stringer staircase the treads sit in grooves milled into the stringer — the treads disappear into the stringer at the side, the look is closed and calm. In the open-string staircase (also called a stringer-beam construction) the treads rest on top of sawn-out seats on the stringer — the tread ends stay visible, the staircase looks more open and lighter. We manufacture both variants in our own workshop in Witten, in every flight form and in all six woods.
- Mortised: treads sit in grooves milled into the stringer — closed, calm look
- Open-string (stringer beam): treads rest on sawn-out seats — open, lighter look, tread ends visible
- All flight forms: straight, quarter- or half-turn, landing, Z- or U-shape — the flight form follows your floor plan, not a catalogue
- Number of stringers depends on the flight: a straight staircase usually has two stringers, turned flights have starting, intermediate and landing stringers
- Six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea — oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered
- Material mix possible: treads, stringers and risers may be combined from different woods or surface finishes
Mortised versus open-string — the two stringer types compared
| Feature | Mortised stringer | Open-string (stringer beam) |
|---|---|---|
| Tread support | Treads sit in grooves milled into the stringer | Treads rest on top of sawn-out seats |
| Look | Closed and calm — treads disappear into the stringer at the side | More open and lighter — tread ends stay visible |
| Effect in the room | Looks more solid, frames the flight at the side | Looks slimmer, lets more light through the treads |
| Typical choice | Classic, rather calm stairwell | Modern, open living concept |
| Flight forms | All — straight to turned | All — straight to turned |
| Woods and surfaces | All six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered | All six woods, oiled, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered |
