Baluster (Railing Spindle) — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Vertical infill element between the handrail and the lower rail of a railing.
Balusters are the vertical, load-bearing or infill elements between the handrail and the lower rail of a staircase railing. Together they form the infill and, with their close spacing, ensure fall protection. Under DIN 18065, the clear spacing between two balusters on stairs that can be used by children under four years of age must not exceed 12 cm to prevent slipping through. Typical materials include stainless steel, steel, solid wood and wrought iron. The balusters are either tenoned directly into the handrail or bolted to newel posts and rails. Depending on the design they can be round, square or flat profiles.
