Baroque Staircase — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Representative stair form of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The baroque staircase is a historical stair form of the 17th and 18th centuries, found above all in palaces, castles and grand bourgeois homes. Its hallmarks are harmoniously curved flights, richly profiled handrails with flowing wreath pieces and ornately decorated railings with turned balusters or artfully forged infill. The construction reflects the highest stair-building craft and served not only a functional purpose but also a deliberately representative one. Modern reconstructions and restorations continue to draw on this formal vocabulary in historic buildings today.
