Comfort Rule — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Historical comfort formula for stairs: going minus rise equals 12 cm.
The comfort rule was formulated in the 17th century by French engineer François Blondel. It states that the tread depth (going) minus the rise should equal approximately 120 mm for the most energy-efficient ascent. This formula produces particularly comfortable step ratios but is less common today than the step-ratio formula.
