Rise-to-Going Ratio — Underfoot element

Category: Underfoot element

Ratio of step height to step depth.

The rise-to-going ratio describes the relationship between step height (rise) and step depth (going). It is usually expressed as a pair of figures in centimetres, e.g. 17/29 cm. A balanced rise-to-going ratio ensures comfortable and safe use. Whether a ratio is optimal can be checked with the step-ratio formula (2R + G ≈ 63 cm).
