Single Quarter-Turn Stair (one 90° turn) — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Single flight with exactly one 90° change of direction — standard L-shape.
The quarter-turn single-flight stair is a continuous stair flight with a 90° change of direction executed as a curved section instead of an intermediate landing. The curve can lie at the bottom, in the middle or at the top of the flight and is formed by several winder treads whose goings are flared so that the walking line remains uniform. Compared with an L-shaped staircase with a landing, this form saves floor space and delivers a continuous, flowing walking rhythm. It is one of the most common staircase forms in single- and two-family homes.
