Winding — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Direction change in the stair flight through wedge-shaped steps.
Winding denotes the section of a staircase where the flight changes direction. The direction change is achieved through wedge-shaped winder treads forming a flowing curve. A quarter winding covers 90°, a half winding 180°. The winding can be located at the bottom, in the middle or at the top of the stair flight. Unlike a landing, which also enables a direction change, the winding saves both height and floor area.
