Winder Stair
Staircase with direction change via wedge-shaped steps.
In a winder stair, the flight changes direction using wedge-shaped steps (winders), without requiring an intermediate landing. Depending on the angle of turn, one distinguishes quarter-turn (90°), half-turn (180°) and double quarter-turn stairs. Winder stairs make particularly efficient use of the floor plan and are the most common stair form in single-family houses. Unlike a helical staircase, winder stairs do not follow a continuously circular plan.
