Metal carries, wood refines

Metal staircases with wood cladding

Refining a steel or double-stringer construction with solid wood — millimetre-accurate thanks to digital contour measurement, for new build and existing buildings from our Witten workshop.

Solid oak tread as cladding for a metal staircase — manufactured in our Witten workshop

The metal construction carries, the solid wood cladding makes it warm

Metal staircases carry reliably and slimly — most commonly as a double-stringer construction in which two lateral steel stringers carry the steps, alongside staircases with a central steel beam or with flat-steel sides. What these staircases share: the metal is robust but feels cool and technical. We leave the construction exactly as it is and clad the steps with solid wood — turning the sober metal staircase into a warm, homely staircase. The treads are clad; risers are rather rare on metal staircases because many constructions are deliberately meant to look open and light — but on request we add them at any time afterwards. The decisive point is the precise fit: each step of a metal staircase has its own contour. That is why we trace every single step on site with a digital measuring device that captures the contours directly. From this data we make the wood cladding to the millimetre in our own workshop in Witten, so that every step sits without a gap. The wood treads are then firmly screwed onto the metal construction. This works in new build, when a fresh metal staircase is to get a wood tread from the start, just as in existing buildings, when an existing metal staircase is upgraded. You choose from six woods, each oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered.

  • Construction stays: the metal staircase keeps carrying, we only renew the tread — most commonly double-stringer, alongside steel beam or flat-steel sides
  • Solid wood cladding: we clad the treads and screw them firmly onto the metal construction — cool metal becomes a warm staircase
  • Risers retrofitted on request: often deliberately kept open on metal staircases — on request we add risers at any time, even later
  • Digital contour measurement: we trace every step with a digital measuring device because each metal step has its own contour
  • Millimetre-accurate manufacture: from the contour data we make the cladding to fit in our Witten workshop — every step gap-free
  • Six woods: oak, knotty oak, beech, beech heartwood, ash or hevea — oiled with hard wax oil, clear-lacquered or white-lacquered

New build or existing — the same path to a warm metal staircase

Whether the metal staircase has just been installed or has stood in the house for years — the wood cladding fits in both cases because we measure every step digitally on site. The only difference is the starting point.

New build — refine the new metal construction directly

In new build the metal construction is often already in place before the interior fit-out is finished. We clad the steps directly with solid wood and turn the technical staircase into a warm wood tread from the start.

  • A fresh metal staircase immediately gets a wood tread
  • Digital contour measurement compensates for every step contour
  • Free choice of wood, surface and risers

Existing — upgrade an existing metal staircase

An existing metal staircase keeps its load-bearing construction and gains a new, warm tread. Instead of replacing the staircase, we clad the existing steps with solid wood — a comparatively lean intervention.

  • Load-bearing construction stays, no intervention in the statics
  • Existing metal steps are clad contour-accurately
  • Cool metal becomes a warm wooden staircase
