Bottom Newel Post — Edge-guard fitting

Category: Edge-guard fitting

Lower railing post — also called the starting post — at the foot of the staircase; anchors the handrail at tread 1.

The bottom newel post is the first post of a stair railing at the lower end of the stair flight. It forms the termination of the railing structure and supports the handrail. At the upper end of the staircase, the corresponding exit newel post is located. In high-quality timber staircases, bottom newel posts are often connected with a wreath piece to create a flowing handrail transition.
