Clear Step Gap — Underfoot element

Category: Underfoot element

Vertical gap between a tread surface and the underside of the step above.

The clear step gap is the vertical distance between the tread surface of one step and the underside of the step above. It is particularly relevant for open stairs without risers: under DIN 18065, this gap may not exceed 12 cm on stairs that can be used by children under four years of age, to prevent a child slipping through. In all other cases, the dimension forms part of the overall safety assessment together with railing and rise.
