DIN 18040 — Rule reference

German standard for accessible construction.

DIN 18040 regulates the requirements for accessible construction in Germany. Part 1 covers publicly accessible buildings, Part 2 covers dwellings. For staircases, the standard requires handrails on both sides extending 30 cm beyond the stair flight, contrasting nosing markings, a maximum rise of 170 mm and slip-resistant surfaces. The standard applies to new buildings and significant alterations.
