Climbing stairs requires significantly more energy than walking on level ground.
When climbing stairs, energy expenditure is approximately seven times higher than walking on a level surface. This increased effort should be considered when planning staircases — a comfortable step ratio following the step-ratio formula significantly reduces the effort required.
