Headroom — Glossary entry

Category: Glossary entry

Clear height above the stair flight.

Headroom describes the clear space between the tread surface of a step and an overhead building element such as the ceiling. It is critical for safe and comfortable passage. The minimum dimension is 200 cm per DIN 18065. Insufficient headroom is one of the most common planning errors in stair construction.
