Legal Requirements (Stair Construction) — Rule reference
Category: Rule reference
Legal framework for the planning and construction of stairs.
Legal requirements for stair construction come from several levels. The Model Building Code (MBO) and the sixteen state building codes define which staircases are legally required and which rules apply to escape routes, stairwells and railings. DIN 18065 sets the specific minimum dimensions, DIN 18040 governs accessibility, and DIN 18334 the contractual execution. For commercial buildings, the German workplace ordinance and trade-body rules apply in addition. For any project, the state building code of the relevant federal state is decisive – it specifies or supplements the nationwide rules.
