Mathematical Tread Flaring (Calculation Method) — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Calculation-based method to determine tread goings on curved staircases — formula-driven alternative to graphical flaring.
Mathematical tread flaring determines the step goings in the curved section of a staircase by calculation, in order to achieve a uniform walking line. The basis is a constant going along the walking line, from which the different radii and therefore the angular share of each step can be derived. The method delivers exact coordinates for the leading and trailing edges of each tread and is particularly widespread for quarter- and half-turn staircases. Unlike graphical flaring, it produces tabulated values that can be fed directly into CNC production.
