Newel Pipe — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Central load-bearing pipe of a spiral stair.
The newel pipe is the load-bearing central column of a spiral stair. It carries all structural loads and receives the winder treads radially, connected via flanges, sockets or tenons. Newel pipes are usually made from steel, though timber beams or reinforced concrete versions also exist. In system spiral stairs, the pipe is divided into uniform segments that can be shortened or extended to adapt to different floor-to-floor heights. Diameter and wall thickness are determined by the load, the tread length and the tread fixing system.
