Notched Stringer Staircase — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Stringer staircase with steps set into visible cutouts in the stringers.
In a notched stringer staircase the treads sit in visible, step-shaped cutouts in the stringers, so the upper edge of the stringer traces the outline of the steps. The treads are openly visible and form a striking visual pattern together with the toothed stringer. This construction is closely related to the saddled staircase, but the treads here are additionally framed on their sides. It was widespread in traditional carpentry and still appears today in rustic or historic staircases.
