Rise-Run Triangle — Underfoot element
Category: Underfoot element
Right-angled triangle representing the rise-going ratio graphically.
The rise-run triangle is a right-angled construction triangle in which the horizontal cathetus represents the going, the vertical cathetus the rise and the hypotenuse the slope of the staircase. It is used when laying out and marking stringers to transfer the rise-going ratio to the workpiece at true scale. Traditionally it is formed by a set square and a batten laid on top. In CAD-based planning it remains the underlying concept for all tread and stringer calculations, even if it is no longer drawn physically.
