Stairs Within Apartments — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Connecting stairs within a single dwelling unit.
Stairs within apartments connect two or more levels of the same dwelling unit – for example in maisonettes or single-family homes with a gallery. Under DIN 18065, the same reduced minimum dimensions apply as for stairs in residential buildings with up to two dwellings: usable flight width from 80 cm, maximum rise 200 mm, minimum going from 230 mm. Even with these compact dimensions, the safety requirements for fall protection, headroom and slip resistance must be fully met, and such stairs may serve as the sole access between two living levels.
