Usable Stair Width — Geometric specification
Category: Geometric specification
Clear width of a stair flight available for walking.
The usable stair width is the width actually available for walking along a stair flight. It is measured in plan between the inner boundaries: between a wall and the inner edge of the handrail, or between the inner edges of handrails on both sides. Under DIN 18065, the minimum usable width is 80 cm for stairs in residential buildings with up to two apartments and within apartments, and 100 cm for stairs in non-residential buildings. The constructional width between the stringers is accordingly larger, since handrails and stringer end assemblies project into it.
