Stair Width — Geometric specification

Category: Geometric specification

Clear distance between handrails (or handrail and wall) — determines walking space. DIN 18065 requires at least 80 cm for required residential stairs.

The stair width is the clear distance between two handrails or between the handrail and the wall. It determines how much space is available for walking. DIN 18065 requires a minimum stair width of 80 cm for required residential stairs and 50 cm for non-required stairs. In apartment buildings and public buildings, greater minimum widths apply.
