The stair width is the clear distance between two handrails or between the handrail and the wall. It determines how much space is available for walking. DIN 18065 requires a minimum stair width of 80 cm for required residential stairs and 50 cm for non-required stairs. In apartment buildings and public buildings, greater minimum widths apply.
