Tread Dimensions — Going and Length — Underfoot element
Category: Underfoot element
Modern DIN 18065 base dimensions of the bounding rectangle of a tread (going × length).
To describe a tread dimensionally, an imaginary rectangle is placed around the leading edge. The tread width is the dimension parallel to the flight and describes the depth of the tread surface in the direction of travel. The tread length is the dimension perpendicular to it and gives the lateral extent of the tread. Both values are stated in millimetres and form the basis for cutting, material planning and construction drawings. They must be distinguished from the going, which refers to the visible, usable portion of the tread surface.
