Wood Moisture Content
Residual moisture in timber after technical drying.
Wood moisture content indicates the water content of the timber as a percentage. Stair-tread timber is dried to 6–8 % moisture content, which corresponds to equilibrium in heated interiors. Too high a moisture content during manufacture leads to warping, cracking and joint opening. Too low a moisture content can also cause cracks. Correct wood moisture during manufacture and installation is an essential quality criterion.
