Top Step — Underfoot element

Category: Underfoot element

The uppermost step of a stair flight — also known as the exit step — where the handrail meets the landing.

The top step is the final and uppermost step of a stair flight and forms the transition to the exit landing or to the floor slab above. In many constructions it coincides with the landing or the ceiling slab. Together with the bottom step at the foot of the staircase, it marks the two end points of a flight and is often given a special design emphasis, for example through a wider shape or a decorative newel post.
