Building Classes — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Categorisation of buildings by height and area.
State building codes classify buildings into different building classes. This classification is based on the height of the uppermost occupied room and the total floor area. The higher the building class, the stricter the requirements for fire protection and construction — including for staircases. Class 1 covers detached buildings up to 7 m in height, Class 5 covers other buildings requiring high fire resistance.
