Finger Clearance — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Minimum clearance between the handrail and adjacent building components.
Finger clearance is the clear gap between a handrail and adjacent building components such as walls, newel posts or infill. It is dimensioned so that the hand can fully grasp the handrail without being pinched. According to the generally recognised rules of technology, the finger clearance should be at least 50 mm – slightly more for accessible designs under DIN 18040. Finger clearance applies both above the handrail (distance to the wall or ceiling) and at its sides (between the handrail and neighbouring elements) and is an important safety feature, especially for use by children or older users.
