L-Shaped Staircase (Quarter-Turn with Landing) — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Two straight flights joined at a right angle by an intermediate landing — compare to winder stairs without landing.
The L-shaped staircase – also known as the quarter-turn staircase with landing – consists of two straight flight sections offset at a right angle by an intermediate landing. The resulting plan forms the namesake L. Compared with a continuous straight staircase, the L-shape saves horizontal length by changing direction and fits neatly into room corners. It is often used where a fully straight staircase would be too long or where the layout needs to wrap around a load-bearing wall. As an alternative to the landing solution, the change of direction can also be executed as a quarter-turn curved section.
