Step Length — Geometric specification
Category: Geometric specification
Average stride length used as the basis of the rise-going ratio.
The step length – also called stride length – is the average stride a walking adult takes on a horizontal surface. It is typically between 590 and 650 mm and forms the basis for calculating the rise-going ratio of a staircase. As a surface becomes steeper, the stride shortens – on a vertical ladder it is only about 315 mm (step height). From this relationship the classical rules for comfortable stairs are derived: the pace rule, the comfort rule and the safety rule.
