Toothed Stringer — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Stringer with tooth-shaped cut-outs used on saddled staircases.
The toothed stringer has a stepped upper edge with tooth-like cut-outs on which the treads rest on the horizontal surfaces. It is used on saddled stringer staircases, where the treads sit on the stringer rather than being mortised into grooves. The toothed stringer is usually visible on the open side of a staircase and gives it its characteristic stepped, sculptural appearance. It can be executed in straight, curved or even compound curved runs as a glue-laminated construction.
