U-Shaped (Half-Turn) Staircase — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Staircase with two parallel flights offset by a 180° change of direction.
The U-shaped or half-turn staircase consists of two flight sections lying parallel to each other in plan, connected by an intermediate landing with a 180° change of direction. The second flight runs exactly opposite to the first – hence the name. It is a classic staircase form in stairwells and uses the available floor plan very efficiently. As an alternative to the landing version, the change of direction can also be executed as a half-turn curved section, which shortens the total horizontal length and produces a flowing transition.
